Top Tips for Keeping Pets Safe this Spring

Spring is a time of all things new, a season when many people get inspired to make changes. Whether new additions or new adventures, it’s what’s on everyone’s mind.

With that said, it’s important to be safe wherever you are, and whatever you’re doing. As safety experts, we’d like to offer you our tips for keeping your beloved pets safe this spring, so the season is fun-filled and worry-free.

Home Improvements

As the temperatures rise, everyone seems to have spring cleaning and home improving at the top of their list. Whether you’re painting, de-cluttering, or adding a new addition onto your home, keep in mind that your pets could get very curious, and could be put at risk. Be sure to use pet-safe paint and pick up any object they could choke on, such as nails and other small tools. The best way to ensure their safety is to confine your pets to a safe room blocked off by a gate. Our Wire Mesh Gate Line is the perfect way to keep them out of harm. Choose the appropriate size based on the size of your dog, and relax knowing your furry friend is safe.

Lawn and Garden

Nothing says spring like a garden in full bloom, but remember that fertilizers and insecticides can be fatal to a pet if ingested. And some of those fragrant flowers we favor are a lot less harmless than they look; lilies, for instance, are poisonous to animals. If you want to enjoy your green thumb and your pet’s company at the same time, our 108” Keepsafe is the perfect solution. It can be used to block off a one-car garage and allows you to keep your pet outside with you, yet safely confined—even if you don’t have a fence.

On the Road

Spring is in the air, adventures await, and the only one happier than you to hit the road is your dog, who looks irresistibly cute with his ears flapping in the wind. But his vehicle safety is just as important as yours, and this is ensured by keeping him secured in a pet-safe area of the car. Our PetShield Travel Barriers are the perfect way to protect your pooch while on springtime joy rides. And for SUVs or vans, our 3716 Bucket Seat Barrier allows the whole family (pup included) to ride safely together.850

Once you get to your destination—whether beach, picnic, or party at a friend’s place—you can keep pets and kids safe and away from harm (stairs, stoves, barbeques, etc). with our Play Yards, complete with patented Sun Shades.

We hope you have a great summer. Just don’t forget to stay safe!

Another Great Year at Global Pet Expo

At GMI, we’re very proud of the quality products we manufacture, and we love introducing them to more people. One of our favorite things is to attend various industry trade shows, where we can get face-to-face with current and potential customers, while learning about the latest industry happenings.

We recently attended the Global Pet Expo, March 12-14 in Orlando, FL, and it was a great success. Global Pet Expo is simply the largest annual pet industry trade show, and the single best opportunity to connect with people in the pet industry. Thousands of people from around the world—exhibitors and attendees—come together to display and view products, network, and learn. It’s truly an exciting event.

This year proved to be no exception. There we exhibited our Variety Display Packs, which offer retail customers a great way to easily display gates or pet barriers. These packs are three-tiered systems that conveniently hold an assortment of gates or barriers in a streamlined, organized presentation. They show off the variety of gates/barriers within them, without taking up a lot of space, and look great standing at the end of aisles in retail stores.

We provide all of the racks and marketing to accompany the Display Packs, along with signage that connects to the rack and gives all of the information on the product, giving the consumer an educated choice. Because the customer clearly sees what they are buying, these products consistently result in an increase in sales and a decrease in returns.

We met with so many people at the Global Pet Expo who were very interested in this unique product, and it proved to be a great way to get leads and sales, but also to reach customers who are normally harder to reach. We also gave away a free iPad via raffle, and would like to congratulate the winner, Jim Warren, of Paws ‘N Play in Southern Maryland.

The event was a great success, and we can’t wait to go next year—hope to see you there!

How to Travel with Your Kids with Safety and Ease

Many first-time parents will tell you that the thought of traveling with their baby or toddler brings a great deal of stress—enough to make many simply scratch the idea of going anywhere.

However, those who have done it will be the first to say that you can and should travel with 475cropmedyour child, as long as you take the necessary steps ahead of time. One of the most important (and easiest) precautions to take is to bring a portable, pressure-mounted gate with you. Their portability makes it simple to turn a hotel room or relative’s home into a child-proof environment.

While you can’t expect someone else to baby-proof their home for you, you can bring the safety with you. While in someone else’s home, use the gate to restrict access to the following rooms and areas:

  • Kitchens: sharp utensils, hot ovens, and open dishwashers pose a serious threat
  • Bathrooms: low cabinets, especially those with medicine in them, should always be off access
  • Living rooms with fireplaces
  • Home offices with wires, box cutters, scissors, etc.
  • Staircases: between 1998 and 2008, 932,000 children under the age of five were taken to the hospital for injuries related to staircases*

While staying in a hotel, use gates to keep your children away from:

  • Bathrooms: there may not be medicine or cleaning products, but they’re not always as sanitary as you’d think
  • In-room kitchens with utensils, unstable cabinets, etc.
  • Complimentary hotel amenities: lotions, soaps, shampoos, etc. could be hazardous to young children

Having a child doesn’t mean you have to stop your traveling or wait until they’re older; in fact, traveling with your kids can be very rewarding. Portable pressure-mounted gates provide the opportunity to go anywhere while having the peace of mind that your little ones are safe and protected. Bon baby voyage!

December is Made in America Month!

There was a time, not too long ago, when most everything we bought was made in factories within the U.S. Our manufacturing industry was strong. It employed our families, our friends, and our neighbors and produced just about everything we needed. Then in the 1970s U.S. manufacturing began to change as overseas manufacturing became a cheaper option.

It has taken a while but the importance of buying products made in the U.S. is news again. People are starting to realize that a strong manufacturing industry is vital to a strong nation. Manufacturing is the backbone of our economy and returns more money to the economy than it spends while employing thousands of people in steady, well paying jobs.manufacturingday9

December is the ideal time to become aware of our own spending power. As consumers we can aid the manufacturing renaissance by making a conscience effort to buy goods made in the U.S. In 1985, President Reagan proclaimed that December is Made in America Month. The proclamation reads, “I invite the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities to recognize and celebrate the excellence of American products.” What better way is there to celebrate American products then by purchasing American products?

At Gateway Manufacturing, we have always believed in the American dream. We understand the value of American workmanship. In products such as our wooden gates, each and every part is made and manufactured in the USA. We source all components from companies that are also committed to manufacturing in the U.S.

The economic importance of supporting our nation’s manufacturing industry is great.  Becoming aware of how one person can keep the industry moving forward is easy as news of the Made in America movement spreads.

GMI® Juvenile & Pet Products – Gateway Manufacturing, Inc.

GMI GateGMI® manufactures top-of-the-line Made in the USA gates for the Pet and Child markets. We mentioned in our last blog a lack of quality often found in products manufactured overseas, and the high quality standards we adhere to here at Gateway. Nowhere is this more apparent than in our gate line.

All of our processes conform to the strict standards set by our ISO 9001:2008 certification. Beyond that, our gates are JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association) Certified , guaranteeing that every component used and every aspect of the design and construction is safe for the small children who will be interacting with our gates.

Every year there are hundreds of recalls on all kinds of baby and child related products. Last year was no exception. Take a look at this list of baby and child recalls from 2011. In striving for a lower bottom-line, many companies will make manufacturing or component choices that impact the integrity of their products. In the gate industry, GMI® strives to achieve the HIGHEST quality in every aspect of our products, components and manufacturing. We insist on tight control of our raw material, sourcing all of the components in our Made in the USA gates from regional sources. Our production line and team are subject to hourly SPC (Statistical Process Control) checks, once an hour, every day, on every production line. Our engineering team is continually testing and innovating to keep our gates the safest in the industry. We’ve also earned patents for multiple aspects of our gates—each aspect designed with safety in mind.

All of our efforts have contributed to a distinction we are extremely proud of: Gateway Manufacturing’s GMI® Brand is the only gate manufacturer that has never had a recall—ever.

Gateway Manufacturing: Made in America

Made In America products and practices are wonderful things. They make sense for businesses and consumers, they keep American families working, and they display to the world what America does best—create. We’ve put together a list of some of the benefits of Made in America, and the ways in which Gateway Manufacturing supports Made in America every day.

Quality Control – Products Made in America are subject to much stricter standards than those manufactured overseas. For that reason products made here are of a consistently higher quality than those that have been outsourced overseas.

Shorter Lead Times, Greater Inventory Control – It takes a long time for products to make it to U.S. shores from overseas. Because of that, it’s important to place very large orders. You don’t want to be caught short when it takes six months to get more product. But consumer trends change much faster than that, and in these tough times who can afford to be stuck with products that don’t sell? Because we’re located here in the U.S., we can ship to our clients as needed. To handle a change in demand takes nothing more than a simple phone call, and we’ll change production to match our clients’ needs.

Sourcing from America – Made in America doesn’t just mean manufacturing here, it also means sourcing from American suppliers. All of our wood comes from Kentucky and Ohio, and we get our metal stamping components from local and regional sources. Not only are we keeping jobs here in our own facility, we’re keeping Americans working across the country.

Logistics – The time and money it takes to get a product from Point A to Point B is an important consideration for any business. It’s a lot faster and cheaper to get something from our facility here in Kentucky to another part of the country than it is to get it shipped from overseas to a port on either coast, and then to have it shipped from there.

Made in America is a point of pride. Keeping America working feels good, and it results in higher quality products and services that consumers here and overseas appreciate. It’s a practice with a lot of great benefits, and we’re proud to be doing our part.
