Top Tips for Keeping Pets Safe this Spring

Spring is a time of all things new, a season when many people get inspired to make changes. Whether new additions or new adventures, it’s what’s on everyone’s mind.

With that said, it’s important to be safe wherever you are, and whatever you’re doing. As safety experts, we’d like to offer you our tips for keeping your beloved pets safe this spring, so the season is fun-filled and worry-free.

Home Improvements

As the temperatures rise, everyone seems to have spring cleaning and home improving at the top of their list. Whether you’re painting, de-cluttering, or adding a new addition onto your home, keep in mind that your pets could get very curious, and could be put at risk. Be sure to use pet-safe paint and pick up any object they could choke on, such as nails and other small tools. The best way to ensure their safety is to confine your pets to a safe room blocked off by a gate. Our Wire Mesh Gate Line is the perfect way to keep them out of harm. Choose the appropriate size based on the size of your dog, and relax knowing your furry friend is safe.

Lawn and Garden

Nothing says spring like a garden in full bloom, but remember that fertilizers and insecticides can be fatal to a pet if ingested. And some of those fragrant flowers we favor are a lot less harmless than they look; lilies, for instance, are poisonous to animals. If you want to enjoy your green thumb and your pet’s company at the same time, our 108” Keepsafe is the perfect solution. It can be used to block off a one-car garage and allows you to keep your pet outside with you, yet safely confined—even if you don’t have a fence.

On the Road

Spring is in the air, adventures await, and the only one happier than you to hit the road is your dog, who looks irresistibly cute with his ears flapping in the wind. But his vehicle safety is just as important as yours, and this is ensured by keeping him secured in a pet-safe area of the car. Our PetShield Travel Barriers are the perfect way to protect your pooch while on springtime joy rides. And for SUVs or vans, our 3716 Bucket Seat Barrier allows the whole family (pup included) to ride safely together.850

Once you get to your destination—whether beach, picnic, or party at a friend’s place—you can keep pets and kids safe and away from harm (stairs, stoves, barbeques, etc). with our Play Yards, complete with patented Sun Shades.

We hope you have a great summer. Just don’t forget to stay safe!

Another Great Year at Global Pet Expo

At GMI, we’re very proud of the quality products we manufacture, and we love introducing them to more people. One of our favorite things is to attend various industry trade shows, where we can get face-to-face with current and potential customers, while learning about the latest industry happenings.

We recently attended the Global Pet Expo, March 12-14 in Orlando, FL, and it was a great success. Global Pet Expo is simply the largest annual pet industry trade show, and the single best opportunity to connect with people in the pet industry. Thousands of people from around the world—exhibitors and attendees—come together to display and view products, network, and learn. It’s truly an exciting event.

This year proved to be no exception. There we exhibited our Variety Display Packs, which offer retail customers a great way to easily display gates or pet barriers. These packs are three-tiered systems that conveniently hold an assortment of gates or barriers in a streamlined, organized presentation. They show off the variety of gates/barriers within them, without taking up a lot of space, and look great standing at the end of aisles in retail stores.

We provide all of the racks and marketing to accompany the Display Packs, along with signage that connects to the rack and gives all of the information on the product, giving the consumer an educated choice. Because the customer clearly sees what they are buying, these products consistently result in an increase in sales and a decrease in returns.

We met with so many people at the Global Pet Expo who were very interested in this unique product, and it proved to be a great way to get leads and sales, but also to reach customers who are normally harder to reach. We also gave away a free iPad via raffle, and would like to congratulate the winner, Jim Warren, of Paws ‘N Play in Southern Maryland.

The event was a great success, and we can’t wait to go next year—hope to see you there!

How to Travel with Your Kids with Safety and Ease

Many first-time parents will tell you that the thought of traveling with their baby or toddler brings a great deal of stress—enough to make many simply scratch the idea of going anywhere.

However, those who have done it will be the first to say that you can and should travel with 475cropmedyour child, as long as you take the necessary steps ahead of time. One of the most important (and easiest) precautions to take is to bring a portable, pressure-mounted gate with you. Their portability makes it simple to turn a hotel room or relative’s home into a child-proof environment.

While you can’t expect someone else to baby-proof their home for you, you can bring the safety with you. While in someone else’s home, use the gate to restrict access to the following rooms and areas:

  • Kitchens: sharp utensils, hot ovens, and open dishwashers pose a serious threat
  • Bathrooms: low cabinets, especially those with medicine in them, should always be off access
  • Living rooms with fireplaces
  • Home offices with wires, box cutters, scissors, etc.
  • Staircases: between 1998 and 2008, 932,000 children under the age of five were taken to the hospital for injuries related to staircases*

While staying in a hotel, use gates to keep your children away from:

  • Bathrooms: there may not be medicine or cleaning products, but they’re not always as sanitary as you’d think
  • In-room kitchens with utensils, unstable cabinets, etc.
  • Complimentary hotel amenities: lotions, soaps, shampoos, etc. could be hazardous to young children

Having a child doesn’t mean you have to stop your traveling or wait until they’re older; in fact, traveling with your kids can be very rewarding. Portable pressure-mounted gates provide the opportunity to go anywhere while having the peace of mind that your little ones are safe and protected. Bon baby voyage!

Guide to Selecting the Perfect Pet Gate

If you’re searching for a pet gate for your home, you may quickly discover that they come in a myriad of different sizes, materials and mechanisms. Navigating through the options can indeed be overwhelming if you haven’t first considered the specific features that you want or need. The experts at Gateway Manufacturing are happy to offer our tips and suggestions to help you make the right choice.

An important consideration when you start your search is location. A common location for pet gates is at the top of a staircase. Called “top of stairs” gates, these gates are practical for owners of dogs both old and young. They protect young puppies from falling down a set of stairs and getting injured. They also protect old or sick dogs from climbing or descending stairs without proper assistance. The location of the gate can help you determine its size, type, and even style.

The size and temperament of your pet is also a deciding factor. A toy-sized dog typically won’t require a tall gate, while a larger breed animal would. A smaller dog may also be able to fit through the widely-spaced slats on certain gates, making mesh a better option. Animals that are prone to jumping over obstacles might also require a taller gate. Your pet’s size and personality can thus determine the height and style of the gate that’s best for your home.

Durability and looks are also important factors for many pet owners. Some gates are made from wire mesh, while others are made from wood. Wire is an ideal choice for dogs that tend to chew. Wood, on the other hand, has an organic look and feel and may be colored with pet-safe stains to match the surrounding décor.

Before you begin your search for a pet gate, consider your specific circumstances. The size and personality of your pet will play a large role in the type of gate that you need to establish an effective boundary. The location of the gate, in addition, should help you determine the right dimensions and aesthetic style for your home.

December is Made in America Month!

There was a time, not too long ago, when most everything we bought was made in factories within the U.S. Our manufacturing industry was strong. It employed our families, our friends, and our neighbors and produced just about everything we needed. Then in the 1970s U.S. manufacturing began to change as overseas manufacturing became a cheaper option.

It has taken a while but the importance of buying products made in the U.S. is news again. People are starting to realize that a strong manufacturing industry is vital to a strong nation. Manufacturing is the backbone of our economy and returns more money to the economy than it spends while employing thousands of people in steady, well paying jobs.manufacturingday9

December is the ideal time to become aware of our own spending power. As consumers we can aid the manufacturing renaissance by making a conscience effort to buy goods made in the U.S. In 1985, President Reagan proclaimed that December is Made in America Month. The proclamation reads, “I invite the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities to recognize and celebrate the excellence of American products.” What better way is there to celebrate American products then by purchasing American products?

At Gateway Manufacturing, we have always believed in the American dream. We understand the value of American workmanship. In products such as our wooden gates, each and every part is made and manufactured in the USA. We source all components from companies that are also committed to manufacturing in the U.S.

The economic importance of supporting our nation’s manufacturing industry is great.  Becoming aware of how one person can keep the industry moving forward is easy as news of the Made in America movement spreads.

Keeping Children and Pets Safe During the Holidays

Thanksgiving is here, which means the holiday season has officially begun! It’s that special time of year when we spend extra time making memories with family, friends, and loved ones. However, it can also be a dangerous time if your home (or Grandma’s) isn’t properly child or pet proofed.

If your family’s home is anything like ours during the holidays (boisterous, loud and a bit chaotic) then you know how easy it can be to become forgetful of a small child or pet’s presence. One second can be too long when it comes to staircases, fireplaces and rooms with other hazards. The simple solution that doesn’t interrupt cooking, socializing or Uncle Gary’s exaggerated football stories; A reliable, pressure mounted baby and pet gate!376pic

According to this article, everything from poisonous poinsettias to Hanukkah candles poses risks; risks that can be avoided by the placement of a gate. A pressure mounted gate can be either kept on hand at your own home or easily transported to a relative’s. The advantage of using a gate that doesn’t require putting holes in walls is a plus, but ensuring the safety of your kids and pets is what gives you peace of mind during a fun yet stressful time.

At GMI, we offer a variety of gates in different shapes and sizes that can help you reach this peace of mind. We have everything from Wood expansion gates , Wire mesh gates , Wood slat swing gates , and more to help give your children and pets the protection they need. Eliminate all your added holiday stress by knowing your precious children and pets are safe and secure with the help from a GMI gate.

Want to know more about specific household items that can pose dangers and should be blocked off by gates? Check out this useful list. If you’ve got any questions about the right gate for your particular needs, feel free to contact us; we’re happy to help!

We wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday season!

The Evolution of Manufacturing Equipment – Specialized Machines for Specialized Tasks

Side Frame Drill FrontManufacturing equipment grows more sophisticated all the time. The technological revolution that turned your phone into a computer and that is sweeping through the other devices in your home has made its way to the manufacturing floor as well. In addition to mechanical know-how, today’s machine operators have to be familiar with programming in order to fine tune the various controls and protocols that govern an ever increasing array of machines.

As products become more specialized, machines need to follow suit. Just as a custom product will do a specified job better than a standard product tweaked to suit the task, a custom machine will more efficiently manufacture that product. Product dictates machine design, not the other way around. When we get a new project here at Gateway, our process engineer will often build a new machine from the ground up. And the customization doesn’t stop there. All of our production lines are purposefully designed around our customer’s specific project. Properly planning and laying out the production line cuts down on wasted steps and down time; ultimately cutting lead times, and maximizing margins for our customers.

Side Frame Drill BackLean manufacturing practices are helping companies survive and thrive in today’s difficult economic landscape. The key to successfully implementing lean practices is to design equipment and processes suited to the task at hand. This optimization hinges on having skilled engineers on staff to construct and manage manufacturing equipment, constantly adjusting mechanical components and software protocols to fit the changing parameters of a project.

What is the Importance of Mathematics in Manufacturing?

Mother of ClocksApril is Mathematics Awareness Month. To get an inside perspective on the importance of math, we posed the following question to the Gateway Manufacturing office and engineering & maintenance staff:

What is the importance of mathematics in manufacturing & in running a manufacturing company? How often do you use math in your job?

The answers we received highlight the importance of math not just in manufacturing, but in everyday life. Check out what our employees had to say:

Scottie Elam – Plant Engineer, Engineering Degree w/ emphasis on Manufacturing and Robotics:

“I use Math all the time. In developing parts, reading gauges & building machines. I like it because it’s either right, or it’s wrong—black or white. Math was always fun for me!”

Dusty Goldy – Plant Engineer, Engineering Degree, w/ emphasis on Industrial Technology:

“Math is an everyday issue! I tell my 12 year old daughter, “Whatever profession you are going to choose, learn as much Math as you can. You will use it EVERYDAY!”

Vernier Scale

Vernier Scale

Ernest Barnett, Plant Maintenance:

A LOT!!! You gotta have math!! We use it for EVERYTHING we do around here! Reading gauges & Vernier Scales, gearing, belting, figuring gear ratios. Today I had to drill a hole for a part to within 1/1,000th”. You can’t do that without Math.”

Anna Wright – Customer Service/Order Fulfillment Manager:

“You have to be good at math, because with Order Fulfillment, it’s so automatic! Knowing how many products are in a carton, how many cartons are in the order, how many cartons will ship on a pallet… Without solid math skills, it would be much harder to do my job efficiently.”

Measuring a Crate

Measuring a Crate

Carol Gessford – Controller:

“Math is a major part of my job in accounting. All I do is work with numbers. Making sure amounts on invoices are correct and discounts are figured correctly. Payroll uses math in figuring how much to pay each employee. Payroll taxes have to be figured by multiplying by the correct per cent. Even though the computer program figures all this, I need to know it is doing it correctly by knowing math skills.”

Doug Gessford – CEO, Electrical Engineering Degree, Manufacturing Systems Engineering Advanced Degree:

“Math is part of everyday life. One cannot function through the day without using mathematic skills.

“Without math, how can you figure what something cost to buy because we pay tax on everything? And in Kentucky, you have to add 6% to the cost of something you buy.

“When you eat out, you need to figure the cost of what you’re buying to make sure you have enough money to pay for your meal. Then, if you are having a sit down meal, you need to figure out the tip to give your server.

“As a toddler, you started with math when you were asked ‘On your next birthday, how old will you be?’ You had to add 1 to your current age.

“General manufacturing labor needs to be comfortable with percentages to figure out how close to rate they are running, what your defect rate is. How far ahead or behind the production rate you currently find yourself.

“As an adult, you have to manage your money, and that involves balancing a check book to figuring out how much of a payment you can afford after paying all your monthly bills to buy something.

“Everyone needs to know, understand and be comfortable with using math in order to live in today’s life. Math is an integral part of everyday life.”

Above all, these answers highlight that math is a tool, one that when can be used to pursue a whole host of opportunities. As such a valuable tool, it is important that we continue to reinforce its value to the next generation. If they’re anything like our own staff, they’ll grow to find math more than just useful, but fun.
